DILI, 04 december 2024 (TATOLI) – At the 8th General Assembly of WorldSkills Asia (WSA) held in Taipei from november 20 to 22, 2024, Timor-Leste was unanimously ratified as the host nation for the 10th General Assembly of WorldSkills Asia, scheduled to take place in 2026.

This is a significant achievement that highlights Timor-Leste’s growing leadership in promoting technical and vocational education and training (TVET) across Asia.

The Timorese delegation, led by Official Delegate Isabel Fernandes de Lima (Executive Director of INDMO, I.P.) and Technical Delegate Amândio Livio Borges Belo (TVET/Skills Specialist), was actively involved in discussions on the future of skills development. Their participation in plenary sessions, committee meetings, and networking events emphasized the importance of TVET in addressing workforce challenges in the region.

The 2026 General Assembly will bring together 80 to 120 international delegates, including representatives from TVET-leading nations such as Australia, China, Finland, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and Germany. This event will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge, fostering partnerships, and showcasing Timor-Leste’s commitment to empowering youth and strengthening workforce development.

On the first day of the General Assembly, the Timor-Leste delegation engaged in numerous high-level meetings with sponsors and representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, and Taiwan. These discussions centered on advancing Timor-Leste’s skills development initiatives, an essential step as the country prepares for full ASEAN membership in the coming years.

The 10th WorldSkills Asia General Assembly is poised to be a landmark event, showcasing Timor-Leste’s growth and its commitment to empowering youth through skills development. It also presents a unique opportunity for the nation to strengthen international collaborations and underscore its readiness to contribute to the global skills landscape.

With preparations underway, Timor-Leste is set to welcome the world in 2026, promising an inspiring and unforgettable experience for all delegates.

“Timor-Leste’s role as the host for this prestigious event is not only a reflection of our country’s leadership but also an opportunity to elevate our international profile and strengthen our TVET infrastructure. It will bring global attention to the efforts we are making in skills excellence and open pathways for collaboration, investment, and donor support in education and workforce development,” Aquiles Salvador Guterres, Institutional Strengthening Advisor at National Institute of Workforce Development (INDMO) said in a statement. “We are proud of this achievement and look forward to engaging with local communities and stakeholders as we prepare for this exciting event in 2026. Together, we will continue to inspire the next generation of Timorese youth and leave a lasting legacy in the field of technical and vocational education.”
