DILI, 20 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste, represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of ASEAN Affairs, Milena Rangel, took part in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM) held on 18 and 19 january 2025 at the International Convention Centre in Langkawi, Malaysia.

The AMM Retreat was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, the Honourable Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan.

The meeting discussed ASEAN’s priorities under Malaysia’s Chairmanship theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” as well as exchanged views on issues central to regional peace, stability and prosperity for the peoples of Southeast Asia.

The AMM Retreat addressed regional and international issues of common interest and concern, including priorities for 2025, ASEAN’s external relations, and the organization’s centrality in the evolution of regional architecture.

Minister Freitas emphasized Timor-Leste’s full support for Malaysian leadership, expressing confidence that this presidency will contribute to a region that is economically integrated, resilient, and prepared to face global challenges.

During the meeting, Minister Freitas also thanked the ASEAN Member States for their continued and unwavering support for Timor-Leste’s full membership process and reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s willingness to fulfill the commitments set out in the Accession Roadmap.

He reiterated Timor-Leste’s commitment to contribute to regional initiatives that promote peace, security, and sustainable development, in line with ASEAN’s shared vision of a rules-based, people-centered and forward-looking community.

Since becoming an observer in ASEAN, Timor-Leste has demonstrated a firm commitment to full membership, having achieved a participation rate of 84 percent in around 500 meetings by 2024. These results reflect Timor-Leste’s commitment to full membership of the ASEAN community and the legal instruments in the Political Security Community, Socio-Cultural Community, and Economic Community pillars.

Timor-Leste continues to work closely with ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat to fulfill the requirements of the Accession Roadmap and strengthen regional cooperation. During Malaysia’s chairmanship, significant progress is expected in this process as ASEAN seeks to adopt the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 this year, allowing Timor-Leste to fully advance this vision together with the other member states.
