DILI, 05 february 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste, through the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) will host the International Commerce and Trade Expo, in July.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Filipus Nino Pereira said that the expo is important as it will serve as a platform for Timor-Leste, especially the national companies to showcase their products for global markets.

In preparation for the event, MTI and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste (CCI-TL) have already coordinated and discussed important work to be carried out jointly.

Pereira said that there will be various activities during the Expo, including trade fairs, adding that the MTI has therefore been consulting with Timor-Leste’s private sector and communities to identify potential products for the event.

Minister Pereira stressed that the expo will help increase Timor-Leste’s exports by promoting access to foreign markets, attracting investment, and creating new partnerships.

Last year, the value of Timor-Leste’s imports reached US$868,952,829, compared to the value of the country’s exports in the same year, which was just US$80,977,568.

According to the report of Timor-Leste National Institute of Statistics, I.P. (INETL, I.P), Timor-Leste’s goods and services trade deficit increased from US$746 million in 2023 to US$787 million in 2024.

The significant increase in the negative balance of trade (BOT) shows that Timor-Leste imported more goods in 2024 than in previous years, making Timor-Leste one of the most dependent countries on imported goods in the world.
