Chinese Embassy hosts 2nd Tripartite Joint Meeting to protect legitimate rights of Chinese enterprises and overseas Chinese in TL

DILI, 25 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The Chinese Embassy in Timor-Leste, together with the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL), representatives of Chinese-funded enterprises, and overseas Chinese associations, held the Second Tripartite Joint Meeting to Protect the Legitimate Rights and Interests of Chinese Enterprises and Overseas Chinese in Timor-Leste.

Ambassador Wang Wenli and PNTL Commander-General Henrique attended and delivered speeches. Over 30 participants, including senior PNTL officials from headquarters and regional branches, representatives of Chinese institutions, and overseas Chinese, engaged in in-depth discussions on further consolidating cooperation and enhancing security for Chinese enterprises and citizens in Timor-Leste.

Ambassador Wenli stated that since the establishment of the tripartite coordination mechanism last year, significant progress has been made in improving police-community communication and safeguarding the safety of Chinese enterprises and overseas Chinese. These achievements reflect Timor-Leste’s commitment to advancing bilateral relations and the PNTL’s tireless efforts in maintaining social stability and public security, which China highly appreciates.

She noted that China-Timor-Leste relations achieved historic breakthroughs over the past year. In July 2024, President José Ramos-Horta paid a landmark state visit to China, where President Xi Jinping held warm and friendly talks with him, reaching key consensuses and charting a path toward building a community with a shared future. Chinese enterprises and chambers of commerce in Timor-Leste have actively contributed to the nation’s socio-economic development through multi-dimensional participation and social responsibility initiatives. Recently, the first direct flight between China and Timor-Leste was launched, which will greatly boost bilateral exchanges and economic cooperation. Ambassador Wang expressed confidence that more Chinese enterprises and citizens will invest in, work, and travel to Timor-Leste.

Ambassador Wenli emphasized China’s willingness to deepen the tripartite mechanism by establishing regular communication platforms, improving emergency response protocols, designating permanent liaisons, forming volunteer translation teams, and encouraging enterprises and individuals to enhance security awareness through regular training.

Commander-General Henrique responded positively on behalf of Timor-Leste, commending the growth of bilateral relations and acknowledging the significant contributions of Chinese enterprises and citizens to Timor-Leste’s development. He provided updates on recent public security conditions and pledged to address China’s concerns by strengthening police deployments, standardizing law enforcement procedures, and improving emergency responses to ensure a predictable and secure environment for Chinese partners, thereby fostering deeper cooperation.

Representatives of Chinese enterprises and overseas Chinese praised the tripartite mechanism for effectively enhancing security and creating opportunities for investment, production, and daily life in Timor-Leste. They expressed confidence in strengthened mutual trust and commitment to further contributing to the China-Timor-Leste friendship.
