DILI, 27 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers, On Wednesday, approved US$155,810 to support the Lusophone Project in Timor-Leste.
The government resolution on the voluntary contribution of US$155,810 to the Special Fund of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, aimed at financing the Lusophone Project in the country, was presented by the Vice-Minister for ASEAN Affairs, Milena Maria da Costa Rangel.
The project aims to promote and disseminate the Portuguese language in Timor-Leste and is being implemented by DiliGente, the country’s only online news outlet exclusively in Portuguese.
In 2002, 11% of Timorese reported using Portuguese only at home. By 2019, that number had increased to one third of respondents.
According to a Lao Hamutuk report, about 40% of people aged 40 and older in Timor-Leste are literate in Portuguese.
