DILI, 18 March 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta reaffirms his commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment during a special interview with two basic education student journalists from the Jornalista Lafaek Ki’ik platform of Lafaek Magazine-CARE Timor-Leste, Sem Slovencio Ximenes Dias Santos from EBF Cycle 1.2 São Vicente de Paulo, Bebonuk and Doroteia Virginia da Costa Paula from EBF. Cycle 1. 2. No.3 Benunuc, Metinaro, who spoke directly with the President to hear his perspective on the participation of women and people with disabilities in leadership and decision-making in Timor-Leste.
During the interview, President Horta shared insights into his constitutional roles and responsibilities, explaining how he represents the nation internationally, safeguards democratic institutions, and works with the government to address national priorities.
He emphasized his focus on inclusive development and social justice, describing his position as a guardian of the constitution who ensures all Timorese citizens have equal opportunities.
The President also recounted his humble beginnings in a small village and his journey to becoming a two-time President of Timor-Leste.
Horta described how his early exposure to social inequality sparked his lifelong commitment to human rights and independence for his country. His path took him through exile and a Nobel Peace Prize before eventually serving his people as both Prime Minister and President across two mandates.
The Lafaek project, which now includes community-focused magazines covering health, nutrition, parental involvement in education, and economic well-being for rural families, continues with support from the Government of New Zealand in partnership with the Ministry of Education in Timor-Leste. President Ramos-Horta’s participation reinforces his fundamental mission to ensure every child in Timor-Leste is healthy, well-nourished, learning, safe, and free from poverty.
