DILI, 31 March 2025 (TATOLI) – José Ramos-Horta, the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, along with the Indonesian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, the Muslim community, and ASEAN Ambassadors, celebrated Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal 1446) today at the Indonesian Embassy in Farol, Dili.

President Horta stated that Eid al-Fitr is a time of profound spiritual significance—a celebration of devotion, perseverance, and triumph after a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. It reminds us of the values that unite us as Timorese: compassion, solidarity, and respect for one another’s faith and traditions

Horta emphasized that our nation draws strength from its diversity. The harmony between our Muslim community and citizens of other faiths exemplifies the inclusive spirit that has guided Timor-Leste since independence. In this spirit, I call upon all Timorese, regardless of religious background, to join in celebrating the essence of Eid al-Fitr—forgiveness, reconciliation, and renewed bonds of friendship and family.

“The strength of our nation lies in celebrating our differences together. May the spirit of Eid Al-Fitr inspire us to build a more inclusive and harmonious Timor-Leste. May peace, prosperity, and harmony continue to flourish in our beloved nation”, Horta stated.

On this occasion, the Indonesian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Okto Dorinus Manik, congratulated all Muslim communities, including ASEAN Ambassadors and the President of the Republic, as they celebrated the 1446th Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) in Timor-Leste

“Let us work together to create harmonious religious tolerance, fraternity, and peace in building economically sustainable growth in Timor-Leste,” he concluded.

Eid al-Fitr, meaning “festival of breaking the fast,” marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan, a time of spiritual reflection and renewal for Muslims, and is celebrated with joy, family gatherings, and special prayers.
