DILI, 10 April 2025 (TATOLI) – A delegation from Timor-Leste, led by the Deputy Ombudsman for Good Governance of Human Rights and Justice, Rigoberto Monteiro, participated in the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Special Meeting 1/2025, which took place in Penang, Malaysia, from 8 to 10 April.
The meeting gathered all AICHR Representatives (including the Representative of Timor-Leste to AICHR as an observer), and officials from the ASEAN Secretariat.
The ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment, and the proposed ASEAN Declaration on Promoting the Right to Development and Peace Towards Realising Inclusive and Sustainable Development were among the topics covered in the meeting agenda.
The discussion on the creation of a Five-Year Work Plan (2026-2030) was also highlighted. In addition, ASEAN Senior Official on Environment (ASOEN) and Civil Society Organization (CSO) Pusat KOMAS had interface meetings with AICHR.
In his remark, Deputy Ombudsman Monteiro expressed gratitude to the Chair and AICHR for providing Timor-Leste with the chance to participate in the meetings and the next meeting of the Five-Year Work Plan development in Kuala Lumpur.
He also extended sincere sympathies and solidarity to the people of Myanmar and Thailand in light of the devastating earthquake that caused severe damage.
The delegation present at the meeting included National Director for ASEAN Political-Security Affairs Sidonio Martins, Chief of the Department for Human Rights and Citizens of the Ministry of Justice Elvio Soriano, and Public Relations and Institutional Coordination of the Human Rights and Justice, Olga Sequeira.
TATOLI
