DILI, 23 April 2025 (TATOLI) – The simplicity and humility of President and Nobel Peace Laureate Jose Ramos Horta were evident during his official visit to Bulgaria. President asked Bulgarian authorities not to welcome him at the airport with a guard of honor out of respect for their Easter Holiday of Christian Orthodox.

“In Timor-Leste, we value simplicity and respect for others’ traditions above ceremony. True leadership lies not in protocol but in understanding the heart of a people,” President Ramos-Horta once said.

The President and his delegation also visited the Christian Orthodox Church on Monday, April 21, demonstrating his commitment to interfaith harmony and cultural respect.

While in Bulgaria, President Ramos-Horta received news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francisco. President immediately shared his deepest heartfelt condolences and directed his office to issue an official letter to the Vatican.

President Ramos-Horta also interviewed by international media outlet on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francisco, as President of Timor-Leste, the second most Catholic Country by percentage after the Vatican City

“I feel the profound grief of our nation. His Holiness blessed our land with his presence just months ago, bringing light and hope to our people. Now, as we mourn his passing, we will honor his memory through prayer and reflection,” stated President Horta.

The President’s prompt response from overseas highlighted the significance of Pope Francisco to Timor-Leste and reinforced President Horta’s commitment to spiritual values that transcend national boundaries.
