DILI, 09 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Francisco da Costa Monteiro, met on Thursday afternoon with Malaysian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Amarjit Singh Sarjit Singh, and representatives from Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), led by Jeremy Wong, Vice President of Subsurface & Development, to explore potential cooperation in Timor-Leste’s energy sector.

Minister Monteiro welcomed PETROS’ interest and provided an overview of the Government’s strategy to develop the oil and gas sector through upstream exploration and downstream industrialization.

Monteiro highlighted Timor-Leste’s commitment to building enabling infrastructure that supports investment in refining, LNG, methanol, and helium in the southern coast and encouraged partnerships that could bring technical expertise and long-term value.

The Minister also briefed the delegation on the outcomes of the Concept Select Study for the Greater Sunrise project, confirming that the Timor-Leste LNG (TLNG) option is technically viable and remains the most commercially viable development pathway. His Excellency reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to pursuing this option as a cornerstone of Timor-Leste’s future energy strategy.

Jeremy Wong introduced PETROS as a state-owned company established by the Government of Sarawak in 2017. He shared insights into the company’s rapid growth, outlining Sarawak’s integrated gas roadmap and infrastructure-led approach to industrial development.

PETROS emphasized its interest in learning more about Timor-Leste’s regulatory and investment environment and exploring collaboration through its partnerships and technical capabilities.

Both sides acknowledged the potential for future cooperation and agreed to continue engagement to identify concrete areas of collaboration.
