DILI, 14 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government today dissolved the Unit Overseeing the Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport Development Project, which was established in October 2021.
The Government decree to dissolve the Mission Unit for the Integrated Management of the Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport Development Project (UMGIP-Portuguese) was presented by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu.
“The unit, established under financing agreements with the Asian Development Bank, was never formed and did not carry out any activities,” said in a press statement on Wednesday.
The statement said the dissolution of the unit follows the approval on May 7th, 2025, of a new concept for the airport project and the need to ensure more agile, effective, and efficient management of the initiative.
In February 2025, the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC-Tetun) and Japan Business Consortium, comprising Japan Airport Consultants Inc, Ehira Architects and Engineers Inc, Oriental Consultants Global Co, Ltd, and Nippon Koei CO, LTD, signed contract for the Detailed Engineering Design (DED) of the passenger terminals of the President Nicolau Lobato International Airport (AIPNL-Tetun).
The design of AIPNL’s passenger terminals cost around US$300,000, financed by the Timorese government.
This initiative reflects the IX Constitutional Government’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and the modernization of the country’s critical infrastructure, with the aim of boosting economic growth and improving citizens’ quality of life.
