DILI, 10 June 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos Horta, expressed his profound heartfelt condolences to the Government and People of Zambia following the passing of Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu on June 5, 2025, in Pretoria, South Africa.

In a formal letter of condolence addressed to President of the Republic of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, on June 06, 2025, Horta acknowledged the significant contributions of the late former President to Zambia’s political and institutional development during his tenure as Head of State.

Horta recognized former President Lungu’s dedication to public service and his commitment to the principles of rule of law and national unity, which are embodied in Zambia’s national motto “One Zambia, One Nation.”

He noted that Lungu served with determination and leadership during a challenging period in Zambia’s history.

“Former President Lungu played an important role in the political and institutional life of Zambia, serving with dedication, determination, and a spirit of leadership during a challenging period in the country’s history. His path was guided by a strong sense of duty and commitment to public service, the rule of law, and national unity — principles embodied in the timeless creed, ‘One Zambia, One Nation.’ In this moment of sorrow and mourning, we express our solidarity with the Zambian Nation as it grieves the loss of one of its former Heads of State. We join you in remembrance, with the hope that his legacy may inspire future generations to work with renewed commitment toward peace, democracy, and development,” stated Horta.

President Horta’s message reflects the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between Timor-Leste and Zambia, both nations that have overcome significant challenges in their paths toward democracy and development.
