DILI, 13 June 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans. The pledge was made by Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, during the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), held in Nice, France.
“As a small island developing state, Timor-Leste stands at the forefront—both nationally and internationally—in the implementation of SDG 14 and other global objectives,” Minister Lay said.
Lay emphasized the critical need for cooperation between governments, organizations, and local communities, highlighting the role of technology in preventing natural disasters and protecting marine ecosystems.
He said that Timor-Leste, located in the heart of marine biodiversity, is home to coral reefs, fish, and a range of other marine species. Despite ongoing socio-economic challenges, the country has prioritized ocean conservation and is aligned with the global target of protecting 30% of marine areas by 2030.
Lay also underscored the United Nations’ role in supporting community-based projects related to fisheries, marine resource management, and the sustainable blue economy.
He called for greater international solidarity with small island developing states (SIDS), advocating for a just transition and the upholding of international rights and obligations.
Lay extended his gratitude to the UN, as well as the governments of France and Costa Rica, for hosting the conference.
