Maria Nia Hakat Wins National Student Film Competition on Gender Equality

DILI, 01 July 2025 (TATOLI) – Maria Nia Hakat, a film produced by students from the Catholic Institute for the Training of Teachers (ICFP), won the national film competition on gender equality, The Path to Equality, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Culture in collaboration with the Secretariat of State for Equality.

Second and third place awards were given to Road to Gender Equality and Life Story of the Brave Woman Rosa Ramos, respectively, both produced by students from the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL). The fourth prize went to Dalan ba Igualdade, produced by a group of students from the Institute of Business (IOB).

The first-place winner was awarded a cash prize of US$1,500, and the second-place winner received US$1,000. The third-place winner earned US$750, while the fourth-place recipient took home US$500.

Secretary of State for Equality, Elvina Sousa Carvalho, stated that the competition is part of the government’s efforts to combat sexual harassment in higher education institutions.

Silvestre Azevedo Loiola, representing the ICFP student team, highlighted the strong link between gender inequality and sexual harassment, explaining that harassment often serves as a tool of power and control over women and other marginalized gender groups.
