DILI, 22 July 2025 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste’s women’s beach volleyball team has secured a place in the semifinals of the 12th Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) Games after a win against Cabo Verde.
Represented by Miguela Pereira Ximenes and Augusta Belo, Timor-Leste overcame the Cabo Verdean duo Catarina Fonseca and Maria Clara Lima in straight sets. The Timorese team took the first set convincingly, 21–12, and closed the second set 21–16, maintaining control throughout the match despite Cabo Verde’s attempts to rally.
After the match, Miguela Ximenes expressed gratitude and optimism, emphasizing the importance of preparing for tougher challenges ahead: “With today’s win, we must improve our preparation, especially with strong teams like Portugal awaiting us in the semifinal. But we believe Timor-Leste can win.”
Augusta Belo highlighted the valuable lessons gained from playing against international opponents, noting improvements in their strategies and striking techniques. “We are confident we will win the beach volleyball tournament,” she added.
The team coach, Mario Bento Soares acknowledged the early setbacks faced on the tournament’s opening day but said those experiences provided critical insights for refining team tactics.
“Timorese women’s team showed great progress today. Their strong performances prove they are ready for the next match,” Soares said.
The match was also attended by the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, who showed support for the national athletes as they continue their campaign in the CPLP Games.
