DILI, July 25, 2025 (TATOLI) – Portugal achieved a clean sweep in the chess competition at the 12th CPLP Games, securing all six gold medals across Classical, Rapid, and Mixed Blitz formats.

The standout performers were young talents Matviy Faryma and Sofia Moreira Lopes Rosas Valente, who excelled in all three categories. Faryma, the tournament’s highest-rated player, praised the strong competition and expressed admiration for the host country’s culture.

Angola emerged as Portugal’s main rival, capturing six silver medals, while Cape Verde earned five bronze medals. Host nation Timor-Leste also celebrated success with three bronze medals, boosted by promising young players in both Classical and Rapid formats.

The event featured competitive teams from all Lusophone member states and took place from July 21 to 25 at the Dili Convention Center, under the supervision of national and international arbiters. Medals were presented by representatives of Timor-Leste’s government, CPLP delegations, and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Chess proved to be one of the most competitive and symbolic disciplines at the CPLP Games, highlighting emerging talent and fostering cultural exchange and unity among Portuguese-speaking countries.
