DILI, 26 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The 12th edition of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) Sports Games concluded on Saturday, 26 July 2025, with a vibrant closing ceremony at Dili Municipal Stadium.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, speaking at the event, expressed his “profound pride” in Timor-Leste hosting the games for the first time, emphasizing that “sport is a school of peace and tolerance, a space where everyone belongs, and a source of inspiration, especially for younger generations.”
Gusmão noted that for one week, Dili transformed into more than just the capital of Timor-Leste—it became “the capital of sport, youth, and friendship among CPLP nations,” fostering values such as respect, solidarity, and diversity. “If language unites us, sport strengthens that unity,” he added.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the efforts of all participating delegations and extended gratitude for the friendship and mutual learning. He praised the dedication of organizing teams, volunteers, and support staff, delivering a message of hope to young athletes: “You are the present and the future. You are the guardians of the values that sustain humanity.”
Rui Luís de Andrade, President of the CPLP Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers, congratulated Timor-Leste for its “flawless organization,” calling the games “an extraordinary example of resilience and sportsmanship.”
“Sport is a path to peace and brotherhood. Each young athlete returns home as an ambassador of the values that bring us together,” Andrade said, highlighting the role of the competition in strengthening friendship and cooperation within the Lusophone community.
Held from July 17 to 26, the 12th CPLP Games brought together hundreds of young athletes from six member states—Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste.
Alongside the sports competitions, the event also featured the CPLP Youth Forum and high-level technical meetings focused on youth and sports development.
The next edition of the CPLP Games is scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2027.
