CPLP Games: Portugal, Angola, and Timor-Leste Win Gold in Karate

DILI, July 26, 2025 (TATOLI) – Athletes from Portugal, Angola, and Timor-Leste bagged gold medals in their respective categories during the karate-do finals at the 12th CPLP Sports Games, held at the Dili Gymnasium.

In the men’s 60kg category, Portugal’s Luís António Morais secured the gold medal with a dominant 12-2 victory over Timor-Leste’s Eugénio Wondeng Soares, who took silver. The bronze medals went to Patrício Nkruma Samba Neto of Angola and Morgan Monteiro do Espírito Santo of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Angola’s Jesus António Muanza claimed gold in the men’s 55kg category after edging out Timorese athlete Alexandre Nessi with a narrow 3-2 win. Nessi earned the silver medal, while Kevin de Sousa Silva of Mozambique and Afonso de Bessa Ferreira of Portugal shared the bronze.

In the women’s 53kg division, Timor-Leste’s Maricha Fátima Mota delivered a historic win, earning gold after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Portugal’s Leonor da Silva Gonçalves. Mota was declared the winner for scoring the first point. The bronze medals were awarded to Angola’s Nária Soares and Cape Verde’s Rãnia Rodrigues.

Portugal’s Ema Fernandes took gold in the women’s 48kg category, narrowly defeating Timor-Leste’s Melicia Gusmão 4-3 in the final. Gusmão took silver, while Jordina Américo of Mozambique secured the bronze.
