DILI, 20 August 2025 (TATOLI) – Bruce Begnell, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Timor-Leste, met with President José Ramos-Horta at the Presidential Palace in Dili to discuss bilateral cooperation in the defence and security sector.
Begnell described the meeting as very positive, noting that discussions covered security cooperation programs and other areas of mutual interest. He also praised the President’s humble and attentive demeanor throughout the meeting.
Reaffirming the United States’ commitment to supporting Timor-Leste, Begnell emphasized the importance of strengthening existing ties, particularly in the area of security cooperation.
He further expressed the U.S. intention to collaborate with regional partners to enhance maritime security.
“Military cooperation is not limited to joint exercises between the United States and Timor-Leste, but also includes activities conducted in partnership with other countries, such as Australia, within the framework of regional cooperation,” Begnell stated.
The United States provides defence and security support to Timor-Leste through multiple channels, including bilateral defence dialogues, joint military exercises, and development assistance programs. These efforts aim to bolster Timor-Leste’s defence capabilities, promote regional stability, and enhance its participation in international organizations.
