DILI, 22 August 2025 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Defence, Donaciano Gomes “Pedro Klamar Fuik” and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Portugal, General José Nunes da Fonseca, met in Dili to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries.

Pedro Klamar Fuik emphasized the importance of Portugal’s partnership in the development of the FALINTIL – Timor-Leste Defence Forces (F-FDTL).

“Portugal was the first country to support the creation and evolution of our Armed Forces, from basic training to technical instruction. This ongoing support demonstrates the friendship and solidarity that unite our two nations,” he said.

General José Nunes da Fonseca reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continuing its support for the F-FDTL, highlighting the progress made since Timor-Leste’s independence.

“I would like to praise the performance of the Timor-Leste Defence Forces and reiterate Portugal’s willingness to cooperate, learn together, and act side by side in any situation. We will strengthen areas of cooperation by providing training to Timorese military personnel in Portugal and investing in exchanges,” he stated.

General Nunes da Fonseca also noted that the Portuguese-Timorese partnership in the defence sector has grown steadily over the years, both bilaterally and within the framework of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP).

The Portugal-Timor-Leste Strategic Cooperation Program 2024-2028 reinforces the partnership between the two nations, grounded in their shared historical, cultural, and linguistic ties. It also aligns with global and national commitments, including the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the Portuguese Cooperation Strategy 2030, Timor-Leste’s Strategic Development Plan 2011–2030, and other sectoral strategic plans.
