DILI, 22 August 2025 (TATOLI) – The United States continues to support Timor-Leste’s maritime security as the country prepares to become a full member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in October 2025.
This commitment was reaffirmed by Chargé d’Affaires Bruce Begnell during a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace on Friday.
“I am honored to meet with Prime Minister Gusmão to discuss Timor-Leste’s efforts to join ASEAN in October. The United States will continue to support Timor-Leste’s maritime security, including within the ASEAN framework,” Begnell told journalist at the Government Palace in Dili.
Begnell also highlighted other areas of cooperation, including the rehabilitation of Baucau Airport. He noted that this initiative, along with maritime security efforts, aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the United States and Timor-Leste in the defence and security sectors.
So far, the United States has provided substantial bilateral and multilateral support to Timor-Leste, focusing on strengthening good governance, boosting economic growth, improving healthcare, professionalizing security forces, and fostering stability since the country’s independence in 2002.
This assistance is delivered through agencies such as USAID and the Peace Corps, as well as multilateral organizations and specialized programs. These include health initiatives, anti-corruption efforts, and educational programs like the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.
