DILI, 29 August 2025 (TATOLI) — The Secretariat of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE) will send another 35 Timorese workers to South Korea on September 1, 2025, under a cooperation agreement between the governments of Timor-Leste and South Korea.
The announcement was made by Clementina Araújo, Acting Director-General of SEFOPE, during a farewell ceremony held at Timor Lodge Hall in Comoro.
According to Araújo, for 26 of the workers, this will be their first experience working abroad. The remaining nine are being rehired by the companies they previously worked for.
“Thirty-three workers will be employed in the fishing industry, and two in the industrial sector,” Araújo told journalist at Timor Lodge, Comoro, Dili, on Friday.
One of the selected workers, Adriano Xavier, expressed that the opportunity to work in South Korea represents a chance to improve his family’s livelihood.
Since 2009, the Timorese government has sent more than 5,800 workers to South Korea, contributing over US$43 million in remittances to Timor-Leste’s economy.
