TIANJIN, 01 September 2025 (TATOLI) – The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has made significant progress over the past two decades, expanding in both size and influence since its establishment in 2001, Chinese President Xi Jinping said.
President Xi emphasized that SCO member states now face the important task of building consensus, enhancing cooperation, and drafting a blueprint for future development.
He noted that since its founding, the SCO has remained committed to the Shanghai Spirit of “strengthening solidarity and mutual trust, deepening practical cooperation, and actively participating in international and regional affairs.”
“The SCO has grown into a significant force in promoting a new type of international relations and building a community with a shared future for humanity,” Xi said at a welcoming banquet for the SCO Summit in Tianjin on Sunday.
Amid growing instability, uncertainty, and unpredictability worldwide, Xi stressed that the SCO bears an even greater responsibility to safeguard regional peace and stability while advancing development and prosperity for all countries.
The 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, along with the “SCO Plus” Meeting, brings together leaders from member states, non-member countries, and international organizations to consolidate efforts for regional progress. “We will focus on strengthening cooperation, promoting development, and improving global governance,” Xi said.
The president expressed confidence that, through collective efforts, the SCO will play a greater role, achieve stronger development, and contribute more to solidarity and cooperation among member states. He added that the organization can also pool the strength of the Global South and promote the cause of human advancement.
“As a Chinese saying goes, ‘In a race of a hundred boats, those who row the hardest will lead,” Xi said.
He called on SCO member states to uphold the Shanghai Spirit and to embark from Tianjin on a new journey filled with hope toward a brighter future.
