DILI, 16 September 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, received a high-level delegation from the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States-European Union (OACPS-EU) Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.
The Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) is a multilateral group of 79 nations that fosters sustainable development and poverty eradication through its partnership with the European Union.
The meeting was a central part of the delegation’s official fact-finding mission to Timor-Leste, which takes place from September 14-18.
The discussions focused on reinforcing the strategic partnership between Timor-Leste and the European Union, founded on shared values of democracy, human rights, and sustainable development.
President Ramos-Horta welcomed the delegates, emphasizing the importance of multilateral cooperation. The President stated, “The partnership between Timor-Leste and the European Union is built on a shared commitment to democracy and sustainable development.
This visit by the Joint Parliamentary Assembly is a testament to our strong ties and provides a valuable opportunity to align our priorities for the future, particularly in creating opportunities for our youth and ensuring inclusive growth for all Timorese people.”
During their visit, the OACPS-EU JPA delegation is holding a comprehensive series of meetings with high-level government officials, including the Speaker of the National Parliament, members of the cabinet, the diplomatic corps, and leaders from civil society and the private sector.
The mission aims to gain a deep, firsthand understanding of Timor-Leste’s socio-economic progress, governance structures, and evolving role in the region.
This high-level engagement underscores the enduring commitment of the European Union and its OACPS partners to supporting Timor-Leste’s development journey and to deepening political and economic relations.
