DILI, 25 September 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, officially inaugurated the Dili International Film Festival (DIFF) at a vibrant opening ceremony at Sky Bar, Timor Plaza.
As the official Patron of the festival, the President expressed his long-standing support for the initiative, praising Festival Director Lena Lenzen for her dedication.
In his remarks, the Head of State warmly welcomed international filmmakers and diplomatic representatives from Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and other nations, highlighting the event’s crucial role in promoting cultural exchange and creating invaluable opportunities for the nation’s youth.
President Ramos-Horta emphasized the festival’s significance for aspiring Timorese filmmakers in a country without formal film schools. The President underscored that such events provide a vital platform for learning and inspiration. The Presidency’s commitment extends beyond patronage, having co-hosted a two-day workshop for 30 young filmmakers at the Presidential Palace. The President also humorously confirmed that a special edition of his talk show, the “President Horta Show,” will be part of the festival, further engaging the public and showcasing the creative arts.
The President’s deep involvement signals the strategic importance of the creative industries for national development and international relations. By championing DIFF, the Head of State reinforces his vision of placing Timor-Leste on the regional cultural map, creating pathways for young talent, and using the universal language of film to share Timor-Leste’s stories with the world.
