Timor-Leste condemns deadly terrorist attack on Church in Jordan

DÍLI, 26 October 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate, José Ramos-Horta, unequivocally condemns the barbaric mass shooting targeting worshippers at the Greek Orthodox Church of St George in Karak Governate, Jordan on Friday, October 23, 2026.
This senseless act of violence against innocent civilians attending a religious funeral service constitutes a grave violation of human rights to worship in peace and freedom.
“This attack represents an attack on our shared humanity and values, respect and social and religious cohesion particularly in a region of great tension and uncertainty,” Ramos-Horta said in a statement.
The President said that those responsible for planning, carrying out and aiding and abetting in this appalling act of terror must be brought to justice to face the full force of the law.
Timor-Leste expresses its solidarity and full support for the Jordanian security and judicial authorities’ response in ensuring that the perpetrators are held fully accountable pursuant to Jordanian laws.
Nine people were killed and nearly 40 others wounded in the attack, according to figures released on Saturday.
Three people have been arrested by Jordanian security forces in connection with the attack, Jordanian state media reported on Monday.
