DILI, 22 October 2025 (TATOLI) — The Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste (MCI) has officially launched the Fifth Phase of the Innovative Business Competition (KNI) under the “Pathway to Business” brand. The launch took place on Tuesday at the MCI headquarters in Dili.

This initiative reflects MCI’s commitment to promoting innovation, encouraging youth engagement, and supporting economic diversification across the country.

Director-General of Industry, Reinaldo Borges, said the competition is a strategic program led by the National Directorate for Supporting the Development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (DNAD-MSME).

He explained that KNI provides young people with opportunities to submit innovative business proposals and gain access to technical support, grants, and equipment.

“KNI 2025 will involve around 300 young people and offer technical training, mentorship, budget support, credit access, and business implementation opportunities,” Borges said.

Finalists will participate in an Entrepreneurship Bootcamp before submitting their final innovative business proposals. Winners will receive a cash grant and machinery or equipment valued at a total of US$200,000.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Filipus Nino Pereira highlighted the KNI program as a key component of the national development strategy.

He said its objectives include creating opportunities for the country’s youth, promoting entrepreneurship in agriculture, creative industries, and tourism, and ensuring regional balance for inclusive economic growth.

“Business is never easy, but with creativity, guidance, and clear support, we can turn ideas into real opportunities to ensure economic diversification in Timor-Leste,” the minister said.

He added that KNI will continue to serve as an inclusive platform and expand its scope to reach youth from different age groups, rural communities, and marginalized groups.

The Innovative Business Competition (KNI) is a joint initiative of MCI and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It aims to support young entrepreneurs with training, mentorship, and funding opportunities, particularly in agriculture, industry, and tourism.

The program seeks to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and build a culture of entrepreneurship among youth, women, and vulnerable communities.
