DILI, 23 October 2025 (TATOLI) — The Council of Ministers of Timor-Leste has approved the establishment of National Sea Day, which will be celebrated every year on June 5. The proposal was presented by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão.

According to government sources, the date will be dedicated to recognizing the importance of the sea and marine biodiversity, promoting awareness activities that engage all sectors of society, especially children and young people.

The establishment of this date reflects the recognition of the sea’s importance for environmental balance, community livelihoods, and the country’s sustainable development. It also demonstrates the Government’s commitment to conserving marine resources and implementing the Policy and Action Plan for the Promotion of a Resilient and Sustainable Blue Economy 2025–2035.

The celebrations will take place annually and will rotate among different municipalities, involving local authorities, communities, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

Officials said the initiative aims to highlight not only the economic value of the sea but also its cultural and spiritual significance for the Timorese people.
