Kuala Lumpur, 26 October 2025 — In a landmark moment for regional peace, Cambodia and Thailand today signed a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending months of border tensions — a ceremony witnessed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump, ASEAN leaders, and host Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The signing took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on the sidelines of the Summit’s plenary session. The agreement was formalized between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, under the facilitation of ASEAN Chair Malaysia.

Speaking after the signing, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hailed the agreement as a “victory for ASEAN diplomacy and dialogue,” reaffirming the region’s commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means.

President Trump, who attended the ceremony alongside ASEAN Heads of Government, described the accord as “a significant step toward lasting peace and stability in Southeast Asia,” underscoring Washington’s support for ASEAN-led peace initiatives.

The ceasefire comes after months of escalating tension along the Thai-Cambodian border, where sporadic clashes had raised concerns over regional stability. Under the agreement, both sides committed to:

  • Immediate cessation of hostilities,
  • Establishment of a joint border monitoring mechanism, and
  • Engagement in continued peace dialogue under ASEAN’s mediation framework.

ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn witnessed the exchange of documents, emphasizing that the achievement reflects “ASEAN centrality in action” and the bloc’s ability to promote peace within its own region.

The signing drew a standing ovation from leaders and delegates, marking one of the most defining moments of this year’s Summit.

Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan later told the media that the presence of President Trump at the ceremony “amplified international attention” and reaffirmed the global significance of ASEAN’s peace diplomacy.

The 47th ASEAN Summit continues tomorrow with high-level meetings focusing on economic recovery, climate resilience, and ASEAN’s expanding partnerships — including the official participation of Timor-Leste as the bloc’s 11th member.
