DILI, 04 November 2025 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers approved the draft Resolution Proposal to ratify Timor-Leste’s admission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The proposal, presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, seeks the National Parliament’s ratification of the Declaration of Admission of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to ASEAN.
The declaration was signed in Malaysia on October 26, 2025, during the ceremony marking Timor-Leste’s full accession to the regional organisation.
According to the government, the resolution aims to formally endorse the declaration, which signifies the political acceptance by ASEAN Member States of Timor-Leste as a full Member State.
The document, adopted in accordance with Article 6(4) of the ASEAN Charter, marks a crucial step toward Timor-Leste’s full integration into ASEAN’s institutional mechanisms and structures.
With this approval, Timor-Leste continues advancing its path toward deeper regional cooperation and participation in ASEAN’s decision-making frameworks.
