DILI, 11 November 2025 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament (PN) has unanimously approved a vote of condolence and solidarity with the governments and peoples of the Philippines and Vietnam, who were severely affected by the devastating Typhoon Kalmaegi.
The motion of condolence received 59 votes in favor, with no abstentions or votes against, reflecting the Parliament’s unanimous support for the initiative.
The Secretary of the Parliamentary Bureau, Virgínia Ana Belo, emphasized the severe humanitarian impact of the disaster on both countries.
“With deep sadness and grief, the National Parliament received the news of the devastating Typhoon Kalmaegi, which caused loss of life and a humanitarian tragedy of great magnitude in the Philippines, also affecting Vietnam, though to a lesser extent,” Belo said.
The powerful typhoon brought heavy rains, floods, and landslides, leaving hundreds dead, injured, and displaced, and causing widespread destruction across affected regions.
According to local media reports, the typhoon caused more than 200 deaths in the Philippines, with hundreds more injured and missing. In Vietnam, five people were killed and six others injured.
The Parliament extended its solidarity to the victims and their families, while also commending the “courage and resilience” of firefighters, security forces, volunteers, and humanitarian workers responding in the disaster zones.
In its resolution, the National Parliament reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to regional and international cooperation, particularly within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation efforts. It underscored the importance of unity, mutual support, and coordinated action in addressing the growing impacts of climate change.
CNRT lawmaker Patrocínio dos Reis said the initiative demonstrates national solidarity and fully supports the Government’s decision to organize humanitarian assistance for the affected countries.
