DILI, 26 November 2025 (TATOLI) – President José Ramos-Horta joined Indonesian Ambassador Okto Dorinus Manik and diplomatic guests on Wednesday to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Proclamation of Independence, praising the bilateral relationship as a global model of reconciliation.

In his address, the Head of State honored the visionary leadership of Indonesia’s founding fathers and highlighted the remarkable transformation of the two nations’ relationship into a global model of reconciliation.

Ramos-Horta noted the profound significance of celebrating this milestone during the same week as Timor-Leste’s 50th anniversary of its own Proclamation of Independence, symbolizing a shared journey toward resilience and sovereignty.

Highlighting the strategic evolution of bilateral ties, President Ramos-Horta emphasized 2025 as a turning point in shared history, marking Timor-Leste’s official accession as the 11th member state of ASEAN.

The President reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to deepening cooperation in defense, trade, and education, while underscoring the growing relevance of trilateral cooperation with Indonesia and Australia.

He also spoke warmly of his meaningful exchanges with President Prabowo Subianto, expressing strong optimism for the future and looking forward to welcoming the Indonesian leader for an official visit to Timor-Leste.

Concluding his remarks, President Ramos-Horta paid special tribute to Ambassador Okto Manik and Ibu Flantina for their dedication to strengthening the partnership between Dili and Jakarta, humorously expressing a wish for their mission to be extended.

Ramos-Horta closed the ceremony by offering his best wishes for health and prosperity to the people of Indonesia, reiterating that the flourishing bond between the two neighbors serves as a vital beacon of peace, democracy, and solidarity for the Southeast Asian region.
