DILI, 10 december 2025 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers has appointed the Minister of State Administration, Tomás do Rosário Cabral, and the Minister of Defence, Donaciano do Rosário Gomes, to join the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) mediation mission tasked with monitoring the situation in Guinea-Bissau following the recent coup d’état and the suspension of its electoral process.
The Government said the decision follows the CPLP Council of Foreign Ministers’ recommendation for Guinea-Bissau’s temporary suspension from the organisation and its proposal to transfer the CPLP presidency to another Member State. In response, the Council of Ministers also agreed to express Timor-Leste’s readiness to assume the rotating presidency of the CPLP for the 2026–2027 term.
Last month, military commanders in Guinea-Bissau took full control of the country, ordering the closure of borders and halting the electoral process just three days after general elections.
Their declaration followed heavy gunfire near the presidential palace earlier in the day, where soldiers took control of the main road leading to the compound.
