DILI, 12 december 2025 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Health and the Menzies School of Health Research on Thursday, inaugurated a toxicology laboratory designed to analyse water, food, medicines and environmental samples as part of efforts to strengthen Timor-Leste’s national health system.
The laboratory will play a critical role in detecting chemical and biological substances and identifying drugs, poisons and other potentially toxic compounds that may affect human, animal or environmental health.
“Today, we inaugurate the toxicology laboratory, a strategic and essential unit to protect our population from the risks of toxic substances present in water, food, medicines and the environment,” said Vice-Minister for Institutional Strengthening of Health, José Magno, during the ceremony in Bidau, Dili.
He said that that quality control of water, food and beverages has so far required sending samples abroad for laboratory testing in international reference facilities.
“The toxicology unit is fundamental for the health system. When diseases are caused by poisons, incorrect doses of medicines or contaminated food and water, the laboratory identifies the substances that harm the population,” Magno explained.
He praised national and international partners for supporting training, equipment supply and technical assistance. He stressed that although the new building and equipment are important, it is the professionals who give meaning to the service.
The event was attended by Menzies Country Manager in Timor-Leste, António Gonçalves, and the President of the National Institute of Public Health, Merita Monteiro, among other guests.
