DILI, 15 december 2025 (TATOLI) — Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão said the people of Timor-Leste are “shocked and deeply saddened” by the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, which left many people dead and others injured.
In a statement, Gusmão said the attack had caused “profound suffering” and conveyed condolences to the victims and their families. “The Government of Timor-Leste extends heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and my sympathy to all those who have been injured or traumatised, including the children and families gathered near the Hanukkah celebration,” he said.
The prime minister also expressed solidarity with the Jewish community affected by the attack. “I also express my solidarity with the Jewish community in Australia and around the world at this painful time,” he said.
Gusmão reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s strong support for Australia, describing the violence as contrary to the country’s values. “Timor-Leste stands firmly with the Government and people of Australia. This shocking act of violence is not the Australia that we know and respect,” he said, adding that it “stands against the values of openness, tolerance and respect that Australia represents to our region.”
Highlighting the close ties between the two countries, Gusmão noted that Australia is “a close friend and partner of Timor-Leste” and that many Timorese have strong personal and community links with Sydney and New South Wales. “At this moment of grief, I hold the Australian people in my thoughts and prayers,” he said.
The prime minister also praised the response of Australian authorities to the incident. “I commend the swift response of the Australian authorities who acted with courage to protect the public and save lives,” he said.
Gusmão expressed confidence in Australia’s resilience, saying, “I know that Australians will come together in the face of this tragedy and that the strength of their values, resilience and community spirit will guide the response in the days ahead.”
He concluded by reaffirming shared principles between the two nations. “Timor-Leste stands with Australia in its defence of human dignity and freedom of belief,” Gusmão said. “In the face of such senseless violence, I reaffirm our shared commitment to communities that are safe, open and respectful for all.”
