DILI, 22 december 2025 (TATOLI) – The Presidency of the Republic, in collaboration with the IX Constitutional Government, hosted the annual “Natal ho Povu” celebration at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace. This cherished event brings together the nation’s diverse communities in the spirit of unity during the Christmas season.

The celebrations commenced on December 6 with the opening of a Nativity Exhibition, reviving one of the nation’s most treasured Christmas traditions. The Nativity Scene, deeply rooted in the Christian faith of the people, is a profound expression of Timor-Leste’s spirituality, creativity, and community spirit. Following this, the Presidency distributed Christmas gifts to the communities in all the municipalities, including children, widows, people with special needs, patients at Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares, detainees, and residents of orphanages and underprivileged communities.

The celebration of “Natal ho Povu” event on December 22 began with a vibrant family festival. The program featured cultural performances by children and youth groups from schools, orphanages, and community projects, including the Miracle Group, the Presidential Library Group, and the Portuguese School. Highlights included festive dances, songs, a children’s fashion show, and free activities such as face-painting, games, and crafts.

The second part of the celebration opened with a symbolic traditional welcome by President J. Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão. The program transitioned into a reflective Christmas message and official addresses by the President and Prime Minister.

A key moment was the screening of a short documentary on the Presidency’s work supporting rural communities. This was followed by the official opening of the Christmas fair. The celebration culminated in a symbolic gift-giving ceremony, where the President and Prime Minister presented presents to children and community representatives, concluding with a joyful atmosphere of shared dinner.

The festive spirit was amplified by live musical performances from artists including Tere Elizabeth, Banda Três Pass, and Vidigal Pinto, alongside interactive segments like the Telemor Quiz.

President Ramos-Horta emphasized the deeper meaning of the season, stated, “As we enter the Christmas season, I call on each of you to nurture our sense of community, deepen our solidarity, and strengthen the family bonds that embody our nation’s true spirit. Together, let’s reach out to those most in need, so that the joy of Christmas fills every corner of our community and dwells in the heart of every Timorese.”

The Presidency extends its gratitude to all donors and partners who helped make this celebration possible. Their generosity enhanced the support provided to communities and children during this Christmas season.

The “Natal Ho Povu” program stands as a testament to the commitment of the Presidency and the Government to fostering national unity, celebrating Timorese culture, and sharing the blessings of Christmas directly with the citizens they serve.
