DILI, 29 december 2025 (TATOLI) – The National Hospital Guido Valadares (HNGV) recorded 51 stillbirths out of 1,622 deliveries between September and November, according to the Head of the HNGV Maternity Department, Zinia Mascarenhas.

She said that during the three-month period, the hospital carried out 1,622 births.

Of these, 444 deliveries were by caesarean section, while 1,072 were vaginal births.

Mascarenhas added that 106 of the vaginal deliveries required the use of vacuum extraction.

According to the official, most of the patients had been referred from health centres in Dili and other municipalities.

“Many mothers were not monitored during pregnancy and had problems such as hypertension, diabetes and other complications that worsened the baby’s health, resulting in fetal death,” Zinia Mascarenhas told Tatoli in Dili.

She also noted that some mothers lack awareness of the importance of maternal and child health.

Mascarenhas said the health team has already carried out awareness-raising activities to address this issue.

Records show that from January to September, there were 4,587 births nationwide, of which 136 were stillbirths.
