DILI, 30 december 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pat Walsh, Australian human rights activist and long-time friend of the Timorese people, who died on Monday, december 29, 2025.
In a statement, the government said Pat Walsh dedicated decades of his life to supporting Timor-Leste’s struggle for justice and self-determination.
He played a significant role in advocating for the Timorese people’s right to self-determination and in exposing human rights violations committed during the period of occupation.
The government noted that Walsh also contributed to national reconciliation efforts following the restoration of independence.
Pat Walsh was particularly recognized for his work with the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation (CAVR).
He was also instrumental in preserving and promoting the legacy of the Chega! report, which documents human rights violations and remains a cornerstone of Timor-Leste’s historical record.
The government said his work left a lasting impact on the country’s institutional memory and historical consciousness.
In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the Timorese people, Timor-Leste awarded Pat Walsh the Insignia of the Order of Timor-Leste.
Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Government Spokesperson Agio Pereira, speaking on behalf of the government and the people of Timor-Leste, extended heartfelt condolences to Walsh’s family, friends, and all those who shared his journey.
He said Pat Walsh will be forever remembered for his invaluable contribution to peace, justice, and the dignity of the Timorese people.
