DILI, 08 january 2026 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations during a high-level meeting held in Jakarta on thursda, january 8.

The talks between Timor-Leste Ambassador Roberto Sarmento de Oliveira Soares and Santo Darmosumarto, the newly appointed Director General for Asia-Pacific and Africa at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on “reaffirming both nations’ steadfast commitment to enhancing and safeguarding their bilateral relations.”

The meeting took place at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was attended by senior officials from the Indonesian government, including Ambassador L. Amrih Jinangkung, Director General for International Law and Treaties, Andy Aron, Director of Territorial and Legal Agreements, and Elizani T. X. Nadia Sumampouw, Director of Southeast Asian Affairs.

Discussions centered on several areas of future cooperation, including efforts to resolve outstanding land and maritime boundary issues between Timor-Leste and Indonesia.

During the meeting, Ambassador Soares extended heartfelt congratulations to Director General Darmosumarto on his recent appointment and expressed strong optimism for continued fruitful engagement between the two countries.

In response, Director General Santo Darmosumarto warmly welcomed Ambassador Soares and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment and dedication to its close and supportive relationship with Timor-Leste.

Both sides acknowledged the importance of maintaining a robust and evolving bilateral relationship grounded in shared historical ties, geographical proximity, and mutual respect.

They also emphasized the need to maintain good neighborly relations and uphold the principles of international law.

The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, setting a positive tone for future collaborative efforts between Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
