DILI, 06 March 2026 (TATOLI) – The President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, expressed sincere condolences following the passing of Try Sutrisno, the former Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, who passed away in Jakarta on 2 March 2026, at the age of 90.
In an official letter of condolences addressed to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo, on 5 March 2026, President Ramos-Horta conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the Timorese people to the bereaved family, the Government, and the people of Indonesia.
President Ramos-Horta acknowledged General Sutrisno’s extensive service to his nation, noting his distinguished military career and his tenure as Vice President of Indonesia from 1993 to 1998, which placed him as a central figure in Indonesia’s recent history. Reflecting on the bilateral relationship, the President recognized the complexity of General Sutrisno’s role during significant moments in the shared history of the two nations.
“General Try Sutrisno was present during significant and complex moments in the history of relations between Timor-Leste and Indonesia. While his role in the past is remembered with full awareness of the challenges faced, we also recognize that, in the later stage of his life after retirement, he contributed to the rapprochement and cooperation between our two countries,” President Ramos-Horta stated in his letter.
The President highlighted the former Vice President’s 2011 visit to Timor-Leste as a testament to his personal commitment to fostering stability and bilateral friendship in his post-retirement years.
President Ramos-Horta concluded his message reiterated the respect of the Timorese people for General Sutrisno’s legacy of public service and dedication to Indonesia, offering comfort to his loved ones and the entire Indonesian nation during this time of mourning.
