DILI, 11 March 2026 (TATOLI) — The government of Timor-Leste has launched a reforestation program in Fatucama aimed at restoring degraded land and strengthening efforts to address climate change.

The initiative was launched on March 8 by Secretary of State for Forests Fernandino Vieira da Costa under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry of Timor-Leste, with the participation of government officials, members of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste, local authorities, students from the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e, and community members.

Costa said the program aims to promote reforestation to support sustainable national development and help mitigate the impact of climate change in Timor-Leste.

The initiative also seeks to restore degraded forest ecosystems, prevent soil erosion, improve water conservation, and support local livelihoods while reducing carbon emissions.

“Reforestation is not only about planting trees. It is a key strategy to restore ecosystems, protect soil and water resources, and improve the long-term well-being of communities,” Costa said.

He noted that several areas in and around Dili, particularly the hills between Cristo Rei and Metinaro, have become severely degraded and require urgent restoration.

The reforestation effort forms part of the commitment of the IX Constitutional Government of Timor-Leste to expand tree-planting programs in critical areas across the country.
