DILI, 31 March 2026 (TATOLI) — The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, on Tuesday received a farewell courtesy call from Malaysian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Dato’ Amarjit Singh Sarjit Singh, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, marking the conclusion of the envoy’s diplomatic mission.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed progress in bilateral relations over the past three years, highlighting key achievements in cooperation and connectivity.
President Ramos-Horta expressed his sincere gratitude to the Ambassador for his dedication and for the Malaysian government’s continuous support for Timor-Leste’s development.
Key milestones discussed included the finalization of documentation for the land designated for the construction of the Malaysian Embassy in Pantai Kelapa and the successful implementation of the Air Services Agreement. This agreement has had a positive impact on regional connectivity, with the introduction of direct flights between Dili and Kuala Lumpur operated by Batik Air and Aero Dili.
These achievements were recognized as important steps in strengthening economic ties and promoting closer exchanges between the two countries.
President Ramos-Horta also expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian government, particularly to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, for the support toward Timor-Leste’s accession process to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
In turn, Ambassador Amarjit reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste, especially on its journey toward the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2029.
The Ambassador highlighted that Malaysia will continue to be a steadfast and dedicated partner in ensuring Timor-Leste’s success as a full member of the ASEAN community.
