DILI, 18 April 2026 (TATOLI) — Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão on Saturday inaugurated the rehabilitation of the Maliana urban road in Bobonaro municipality, marking a major step to improve mobility, boost economic activity, and strengthen connectivity in the region.

The project, implemented under the government’s infrastructure development agenda, covers approximately 48 kilometres of roadway between Nunura and Maliana town, including key urban streets. It forms part of broader efforts by the IX Constitutional Government to upgrade road networks and support both local and national economic growth.

The rehabilitation works were carried out by two international companies and financed by the state through the Ministry of Public Works, with an investment exceeding $33 million. Prior to the upgrade, the road was in poor condition, significantly hindering the movement of people and goods, particularly during the rainy season.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Gusmão emphasized the importance of basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges in driving national development. He said improved transport links help facilitate the flow of goods, connect communities, and expand access to essential services and markets, particularly in rural areas.

The President of the Bobonaro Municipal Authority, Paulo Moniz Maia welcomed the project, expressing gratitude on behalf of local residents. He highlighted its positive impact on mobility, economic activity, and overall living conditions in the municipality.

The upgraded road is expected to directly benefit more than 130,000 residents and improve access to key economic, social, and tourism areas, including Marobo and surrounding regions.

Minister of Public Works Samuel Marçal accompanied the Prime Minister at the event, which concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the companies and teams involved in the project’s execution and supervision.

The ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including Vice-Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Adérito Hugo da Costa, Secretary of State for Electricity, Water and Sanitation Santos Noronha, representatives of the Indonesian and Malaysian embassies, Member of Parliament Maria Gorumali Barreto, local authorities, Catholic Church representatives, and community members.

The Maliana road rehabilitation is part of ongoing national efforts to strengthen Timor-Leste’s road network and support sustainable economic development.
