DILI, 21 May 2026 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta extends his deepest gratitude to the people of Timor-Leste, particularly the youth, for ensuring a peaceful and secure environment during the nation’s 24th Restoration of Independence Day celebrations.
Following their regular meeting at the Presidential Palace, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão conveyed the Head of State’s immense pride in how the public safeguarded the country’s reputation.
“The peaceful festivities left a strong, positive impression on the numerous foreign dignitaries and investors in attendance, projecting a powerful image of a stable Timor-Leste that is ready to expand its international partnerships and strengthen its role within ASEAN,” said in a statement.
During the meeting, the two leaders also discussed pressing national matters, including the progress of the urgent Rectifying Budget currently before the National Parliament.
President Ramos-Horta was briefed on the government’s swift efforts to secure essential funds necessary to guarantee fuel supplies, ensure long-term food security, and maintain the uninterrupted operation of state institutions.
The President acknowledged the government’s proactive steps and expressed support for the budget’s anticipated approval by early June, prioritizing the continuous delivery of public services.
While reflecting on the success of the national celebrations, President Ramos-Horta remains deeply focused on the immediate challenges facing the population, particularly the recent severe weather and flooding impacting interior municipalities such as Viqueque, Lautem, and Covalima. Having recently dedicated his time to visiting these affected communities, the President underscored the necessity of robust government support.
Together with the Prime Minister, the Head of State emphasized that the true value of independence relies on a steadfast national vision—one that honors the sacrifices of Timor-Leste’s heroes by tangibly improving the daily lives and welfare of all its citizens.
