DILI, august 3, 2021 (TATOLI)- The world Food Programme (WFP) and National Logistic Center (NLC) signed an agreement letter in the area of supply chains to support the capacity of supply chains in Timor-Leste.
The agreement was signed by Grevásio Cardoso de Jesus da Silva and WFP representative, Dageng Liu, on Thursday, 3 August 2021 in the MTCI meeting room, Fumento Mandarin, Dili Timor-Leste.
The representative of WFP, Dageng Liu said that Besides the warehouse management training, the WFP will continue to provide technical support to increase the capacity of additional supply chains to be developed by NLC, including local agriculture production and access to markets, the supply of local rice and the import, school feeding program, increasing the capacity at national and sub-national levels reviewing the market stabilization policy program.
Timor-Leste has the highest profile of malnutrition in Asia and the Pacific, with stunting affects half of the boys and 47 percent of women. Anaemia also has a very high prevalence high among women infertile and productive age.
Since June 2020 the WFP represented the government and humanitarian agencies to facilitate the provision of medicines and COVID-19 front-line health personnel.
In addition, the EFP has also worked with NLC to conduct market interventions and joint appeal for activities related to flood response, through the MoFAC and the MoF.
The United Nations World Food Program is the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
“We are the world’s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using foods assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people covering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change,” said WFP Representative in Timor-Leste, Dengeng Liu.
“Timor-Leste has owned the minimum national logistics and it is needed more support from WFP, especially for warehouse management, purchasing foods items to storage local foods emergency ensuring the quality situation within chains supply,” Coordinating minister of Economy Affairs, Joaquim Amaral told to TATOLI agency at Fomentu Mandarin, Dili Timor-Leste.
The aim of this agreement to strengthen the working cooperation to increase chain supply in the National Logistic Center on responses to natural disasters, conflict, and other situations is required.
The objective of this MoU is to strengthen cooperation to develop and improve the supply chains of the NLC responding to the various situations regulated by Decree-Law no 26/2014/10 September 2014, and this extension is based on the NLC Strategic Development plan, which is in line the WFP National Strategic Plan for 2018-2021.
Mr. Amaral emphasized that this concordance is attributed to the nutrition program which is needed assistance for EFP to focus on warehouse management for nutritive foods.
