MoPT presents site planning for refugee settlement construction to PM

DILI, 04 october 2021 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Planning and Territory (MoPT), today, presented site planning for refugee settlement construction to Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak.

Minister of Planning and Territory, José Maria dos Reis informed that the site is to construct houses for refugee settlement.

“The site would be surveyed by a joint team of the Secretary of State for Civil Protection (SEPS), the Ministry of State Administration (MAE), and the Land Property,” Reis told reporters after meeting Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, in Dili, today.

Reis said more than 60 flood-affected families are currently living in harsh conditions and having no proper place to live,” said Reis.

Reis called on SEPS and MAE to find solutions to provide shelter for the flood-affected families.

“Surveying the site for the refugee camp is important for the construction of the refugee settlement. Preparing shelter and settlements is needed to anticipate and prepare for future hazards,” Reis said.

Multifunctional refugee settlement would be established in Dili, and municipalities, he said.

In addition, the State Secretary for Civil Protection (SEPS), Joaquim Jose Gusmão dos Reis Martins said SEPS would cooperate with relevant ministries to build the settlement after the approval of the Council of Ministries.

He urged flood-affected families to return to their municipalities, adding the government will support them with the house construction materials and transportation fees.

Martins said those left homeless after their houses were destroyed during the april flash flood are currently living in several refugee centers, including Dom Bosco, Manleuana, Hera, Metiaut, etc.
