DILI, 05 June 2026 (TATOLI) — The Ninth Constitutional Government of Timor-Leste on Friday organized the second edition of the government-led Dili Ocean Parade, launching a week-long series of activities aimed at raising public awareness of marine conservation and promoting the country’s blue economy.

The parade, held as part of Timor-Leste Ocean Week from June 3 to 8, began at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and proceeded to Lecidere, bringing together participants from various municipalities. Marchers displayed colorful costumes, cultural performances, and decorated exhibits highlighting the importance of protecting Timor-Leste’s rich marine biodiversity and underwater resources.

The event was jointly organized by the Land and Maritime Boundaries Office and the Directorate-General of Tourism. The initiative seeks to increase public understanding of ocean conservation while encouraging sustainable economic opportunities linked to the country’s marine resources.

The parade forms part of the commemoration of National Ocean Day, established by the government to strengthen collective efforts to safeguard the marine environment and ensure the sustainable management of Timor-Leste’s coastal and ocean resources.

This year’s celebration was held under the theme, “Promote and Protect the Ocean Through Tara Bandu for a Sustainable Future.” The initiative, led by Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, aims to mobilize communities, institutions, and stakeholders nationwide to support the protection of the country’s oceans for future generations.

Following the parade, the government officially opened a three-day Ocean Fair in Lecidere, bringing together government institutions, development partners, private sector representatives, civil society organizations, and local communities to showcase initiatives related to marine conservation, tourism, fisheries, and the blue economy.

The government also launched the Blue Economy Portal during a ceremony at the Noble Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. The platform is expected to serve as a resource hub for information, policies, and initiatives supporting sustainable ocean-based economic development.

Ocean Week activities are being held in several municipalities, including Dili, Lautém, and Atauro, featuring educational programs, cultural events, and awareness campaigns focused on environmental protection, the blue economy, and the sustainable use of Timor-Leste’s marine resources.

Among those attending the Dili Ocean Parade were Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, President José Ramos-Horta, government officials, development partners, diplomatic representatives, and other invited guests.
