Chinese Embassy Construct one unit of Detention House to PNTL

DILI, 19 december 2021 ( TATOLI) – The Government of China through its Embassy in Timor – Leste built one unit of detention house to the National Police of Timor – Leste (PNTL) to support their work effectively.

The Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Xiao Jianguo said that the Government of China will continue to assist the Government of Timor – Leste in the security sector.

“I received a proposal from the Ministry of Interior since september request for the cooperation support to construct the detention house for the PNTL, thus we decided to construct this house on october and the house is concluded within december before the handed over ceremony,” Jianguo told reporters at the PNTL headquarter Caicoli Dili.

According to Jianguo, the assistance was made since the PNTL’s work is important to protect all the citizens and communities not only Timorese but also from other countries including China.

“On behalf of the Government of Republic Popular of China, and its people I would like to extend my appreciation to the Government of Timor-Leste and PNTL for the support and protecting Chinese citizens who are residing in this country,” said Jianguo.

The Vice Minister of Interior, Antonio Armindo said the detention house was built to facilitate the PNTL Dili municipality to detain criminals who disobey the roles for 72 hours for further processing based on the mandate of the Dili District Court.

“We thanked the Government of the Republic of China through its Embassy for the support of building 1 unit of detention house to PNTL to be used in securing the criminals in Timor – Leste,” said Armindo.

At the same place, PNTL Commissioner Faustino da Costa promised to lead the members of PNTL to keep this detention house to be used for a long term.

The detention house was built at the beginning of October 2021, facilitated by the Republic of Popular Chinese’s Government with a total budget of $US 1 million through its Embassy in Timor – Leste and handed over to the PNTL Dili municipality on 17 december 2021. The detention house has 4 rooms and can accommodate more than 100 prisoners.
