DILI, december 21, 2021 (TATOLI) – The Prime Minister (PM), Taur Matan Ruak says Timorese Tais has social, economic, and cultural values.
Ruak spoke at the official launch of Tais as an intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding, at Timor Plaza, in Dili.
Ruak praised Timorese weavers for continuing to promote Tais in the country and contributing to its recognition as an intangible cultural heritage in the world.
“The recognition of Tais as an intangible cultural heritage do us proud. I remember when I discussed with the Secretary of State for Art and Culture (SoSAC) about the registration process of this traditional fabric. We have some similarities with other fabrics from neighboring countries. However, we need to register ours to be identified,” he said.
Ruak said it is important to promote Tais for the younger generations.
“The Government is committed to continuing working in partnership with all organizations to support the Timorese weavers. I support all the projects and plans of SoSAC, in partnership with UNESCO and the national committee,” he added.
At the same place, the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Timor-Leste, Tom Daley, highlighted the contribution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific Organization (UNESCO) which would provide the financial support, offered by the United States Agency for Development (USAID), adding other development partners would also provide training on the promotion and protection of Tais.
“We plan to help Timor-Leste in raising the knowledge and skills of the population about weaving Tais, particularly at schools to motivate young people in knowing this traditional fabric,” he said.
Last week, UNESCO officially announced Timor-Leste’s Tais, as an intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of safeguarding.
