Horta met with the ASEAN representatives in Timor-Leste

DILI, 22 april 2022 (TATOLI)— Representatives from the five ASEAN member countries (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) in Timor-Leste congratulated the elected President of Timor-Leste (TL), José Ramos Horta in the second round of the Presidential Election.

The five ASEAN representative countries consist of the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the TL, Okto Dorinus Manik, the Thai Ambassador, Ekapol Poolpipat, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines, AbdulMaid Kiram Muin, Chargé d’Affaires of Brunei Darussalam, Wafi Nairul Anawar and the Charge d’Affaires of the Malaysian Embassy, ​​Nur Hidayah Mohd.

“Today I met with all diplomats from ASEAN countries in TL. In the meeting I explained about our electoral process that has been going on so far,” said José Ramos Horta after meeting with representatives of the five ASEAN countries in Farol, this Friday.

In addition, at the meeting, Ramos Horta thanked ASEAN member countries for supporting TL accession to ASEAN at the same time they emphasized their commitment to continue to support TL.

“I hope that on May 19 and 20, the ASEAN delegation will be able to attend the inauguration ceremony. But right now they are having problems finding hotels to stay in,” he said.

Horta hopes that the government can properly prepare for the inauguration process which will be carried out in May. since May 20 is the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Democratic Republic of TL.

“Many state representatives will come however some representatives might have problems regarding the crisis in Russia and Ukraine,” he explained.

He said the process of TL’s accession to ASEAN was ongoing but TL had to ensure domestic stability, especially the country’s economic and political effectiveness. Because, it is not only the responsibility of the President of the Republic but all parties from the Government, DPR, and also the community.
